This is the short story I wrote in a writing seminar ten years ago that became the center of my Alex Winters story.

Clark walked slowly down the dark, dank tunnel with his gun carefully raised. The young detective had traced a series of brutal murders to a group of cultists called the Harbringers.

A solid lead brought Clark to the catacombs of the city. The group had taken a young girl to perform a dark ritual that would complete ther quest to bring forth a powerful evil.

His heart raced as he drew closer, seeing a flicker of light ahead. Clark heard the chanting grow louder with each step.

The Harbringers wore black robes and surrounded the altar which contained bones, candles and the frightened young girl Ava. The eight year old girl was crying.

Taking a deep breath, he ran into the room and called out for them to raise their hands. Instead he was met with their knives.

The pop of his weapon rang out as he began taking each target out, fighting them off one by one until all that stood was Clark and Ava.

He cut the ropes that tied her down and gave her a comforting hug. "Everything's going to be okay," he reassured her.

Ava smiled, then opend her blood red eyes as her innocent smile, turned evil.
