Insidous: Out of the Further - The Demons Are Out

The ghosts and The Further return in this sequel movie. The Lambert family get a reprieve as we shift to another family. Always moving forward in these horror movie franchises. Was it needed? Was it called for?
It's a fun horror movie. Keep doing you Insidious.
We're on #6 in this franchise. Two centered around the Queen of the Further...Elise Rainier. The main three, the Lambert family. In the main group of movies, at its core, it was a father and son journey. Dalton Lambert, the oldest of the kids, can travel to a realm of spirits called the Further. Turns out, it ran in the familly and his father had a similar power as a kid.
The journey continues with a new family, new dynamic. This time, its about the mother and daughter. It's a natural progression and after the Lambert family closed the red door, their story was over. Unfortunately, when one door closes...another one opens.
We start the movie by going back in time to 1999. It's the millennium, baby! Matrix and bullet time is introduced, Buffy's in college, and the world is about to enter a new age of technology...and a young girl's life is about to change forever.
Young Gemma Hall comes home from a tough day of school to find her mom not looking so good. My first thought was, alcoholic maybe? The young Gemma makes her dinner, does her homework (like the great little kid she is) and reads with her flashlight.
Right in front of her, her mom kills herself and a mysterious force shuts the bathroom door shut as she dies. Somehow, it didn't screw her up too much. She grows up and becomes a single mom herself and dental hygienist. She's dating a really cool cop too.
There's a group of three really creepy old people that are walking the neighborhood as she's walking her little girl, Maya. Then, as you expect in a movie like this, things get weird.
Gemma has a dream, well, less a dream, more an astral projection. She's haunted by one of those old people and somehow, brings a broch from that world into this one...we got a new superpower ladies and gentlemen.
One of the more creepier/gross moments comes while she's at work the next day with Lester (one of those old people). Demon possessed Lester bites her, causes her to hit her head and pass out. Back to the Further she goes...surrounded by evil spirts.
All this is building to one very simple thing...they want to use Gemma's power to escape the Further and they want to use her daughter to as well, because little ma'am has the same power.
Gemma has a few allies on this journey to face and stop the ghosties. First, Queen Elise who helps her on the other side. She leads her to another astral projector, Clare to help her save her daughter and stop the spirits and its leader, Cyrus.
Cyrus uses Maya to bring back one spirit after another and the thing about this power is it's draining. It starts to slowly kill her with every spirit she brings back. And of course it's the big hits that we've seen before. So, you have an army evil ghosts. Your daughter is in trouble. What do you do?
Can't spoil everything can I? There are a lot of interesting twists throughout the movie, and if you love movies like this you might see some of them coming. Does it take away from what happens? Maybe a little bit, but it's all about the journey. Even if you see it coming a mile away, when you see it all come together, its still worth seeing.
The movie itself? A great chapter in the Insidious universe, but an average movie overall. The switch from father/son to mother/daughter works. The cast is great. The pacing just seemed a bit off. It went from moving slow to quick, to slow again back to fast until the climax where she saved the world from all the evil spirits...cause that would have been bad having them out in the world.
I recommend it for spooky season. It's good enough for a single watch, more if you love the universe and are binging the entire franchise. I'll give it another watch or two, but I'm not deeply devoted to it.
Enjoy the ride! It's Blumhouse, so it'll always be 50/50, but Insidious is a heavy hitter franchise. It tells a good story and I do wonder if we'll see more of this mother/daughter team in the future. I'll keep heading to the Red Doors if they're shelling them out, until the grosses go down.
3/5
