"Come in close, because the more you think you see, the easier it'll be to fool you."
The third in the series takes the stage, once again pulling off feats of magic and illusion that's totally real and not in any way CGI.
This series is no more, no less a fun heist movie with magic. It's not trying to be more than that. It's not meant to evoke strong feelings or pull at the heartstrings. It will, however, make you want to cheer on the heroes as they reveal their tricks and get back at the villain of the film.
We begin our illusion with the Four Horsemen putting on a one time show. The first in a decade. Stealing from cryptobros and sending their money to the poor people that invested.
Step foward...come in close, because this entire show is an illusion. We meet our new team of magicians who are working together to pull off scams like this. It get's the attention of The Eye and Atlas, who is sent to recruit them for a mission...to steal a heart diamond from Veronika Vanderberg.
She and her family uses their wealth and influence to help war criminals. So, you know, she's the worst.
They hatch a scheme and are soon reunited with the OG Horsemen. Isla Fischer returns after being absent from the second outing. Each return with a tarot card that leads the unified group to a chateau in France with all sorts of magical secrets inside.
The story continues with our heroes being caught, but as per usual, most everything is a misdirect. You're looking over there when you should be paying attention to what's going on here.
Then the reveals come...the mastermind behind the whole thing. The person who orchestrated not only heist and called the other Horsemen to assist.
And it was...
Sorry, can't reveal all the tricks. Spoiling a terrible horror movie or an average movie is one thing...I will never reveal a mystery/thriller reveal.
The movies are fun, as I mentioned, but at times a bit convoluted. It tries so hard to be smart and clever, trying to work that magical angle at times your there, you believe the illusion. Other times, you're like, "What? That can't be right...that's not even practically possible!"
So many things have to go a very specific and direct way for it to work and sometimes you're left with a few extra parts and you just have to put on those suspenders of disbelief.
The ride is enjoyable. It's a heist and pulls you into a world where real magic is very possible. The scope of the visuals work a little better on a big screen, but will be just as fun on the small. Don't have to rush out to see this one, but give it a go on streaming.
For just a moment you'll believe in the power of magic...and a carefully crafted plan to come out ahead and bring down a really dangerous rich person.
4/5
