It was hard to peg what this was. I think the best word to describe this movie is a requel. Its a sequel to Twister, but none of the originals are here so it's kind of a reboot. The only thing I recognized was Dorothy V. So kind of a sequel?
Kate is very much the Helen Hunt character from the first movie. She's brilliant at what she does and can just sense by looking at the weather patterns what the tornados will do. This gets her into trouble at the start of the movie when she's betting on a EF1 for her college thesis experiment, (a way to unravel tornados before they can do serious damage) but it quickly became a 5.
The repercussions causes her to quit chasing and become a scientist for NOAA. An old friend brings her back into the fold with a new company he's working for and needs her expertise. Once she joins, the games begin.
In a somewhat similar fashion (conflicting chasers) as the first one team, Storm Par, that wants to get up close to scan and study tornados. The second team was a renegade YouTuber (Tyler Owens) who seems more into it for the thrills than the science. The leader of whom is quite taken with Kate (understandable, she's cute and awesome).
To me, he came across as a bit of a jerk. Would not like, comment, or subscribe. Driving into the path of a tornado just to light off flares just because? Bit nuts.
As both cross paths during an outbreak of tornados in the mid-west, the true colors of both sides start to come out. Tyler and his team sell their merchandise, but that money is used to buy food and water for those in need. Storm Par isn't as innocent as they seem.
The movie had lots of thrills and intense scenes. They had characters that were rich and complex that you wanted to root for, even when they disappointed you.
Before I give my score I want to stand on my soapbox for a minute...because there's something that happens when bad weather hits that needs to be addressed.
I work for a mid-market TV station. Occasionally, we have nasty storms, tornados and flooding. When this happens, our Chief Meteorologist will cut into your local programming so he can warn people. The next part is key.
Just because these things aren't happening in YOUR area doesn't mean we shouldn't be on. Yes, we're cutting into The Bachelorette finale because tornado warnings need to be issued to people somewhere else in our viewing area.
Look at the devastation on the news and in this movie...THAT is why we cut into your programs when bad weather is here and will cause serious damage. So, for a moment, stow the selfishness and realize that when we're focusing on Area A and you live in Area C, we're trying to take care of Area A and keep them safe. You can watch it next day in multiple places.
I get the frustration. I'd be peeved if my favorite show was cut off, but I understand the why. So be Elsa...Let. It. Go.
And jumping off the box now.
Enjoyed Twisters. The story flowed and there were some great visuals. The action sequences were intense and I liked most of the characters. But overall, it was just okay. I'd watch again, but it's not going to be one of those I can rewatch all the time.
4/5
